LOS ANGELES – (UPDATED January 4, 2022) – PIECE OF MIND, a play by Emma Wood, will be performed by Write Act Repertory from December 3, 2022 – January 29, 2023 at the Brickhouse Theatre in North Hollywood. When Gwen and Allie open a daring business venture to shore up their meagre retirement savings, it seems like a stroke of brilliance. Offering an alternative to traditional counselling, they provide a room with a coffin on a rent by the hour basis. Clients are offered the opportunity to take turns playing dead while one airs their grievances and is heard in full. Piece of mind is expected to follow.
While the concept is unique and the interest in it is huge, when they launch, they unwittingly open a Pandora's box along with the business concept, threatening their investment, their reputations and even their friendship.
A darkly comic series of events involving a series of clients, Allie's daughter Tess and Gwen's Aunt Rowena take them on a rollercoaster ride from hope to desperation.
Along the way, all are forced to face their own demons. Just as the business seems doomed, they discover that the concept is not as mad as it sounds, and that each of them have been helped by it in unexpected ways.
The Brickhouse Theatre is located at 10950 Peach Grove St., North Hollywood, CA 91601 (off Vineland, just north of Camarillo). $25 general admission, $20 Seniors 60+, general seating. Cash only at the box office (no credit/debit cards accepted). On-street parking, ADA and COVID compliant.

LOS ANGELES (September 21, 2022) Write Act Repertory presents a new drama by Willard Manus, THE ATHEIST MOTHER. O'Hair's battle to take God out of our classrooms became a cause celebre in 1961. The Path to Catherine: A New Musical "There is not much more a noblewoman can do in 1740’s Germany than dream of love and the intrigues of court life. She can become a nun if she fails at a betrothal or she can marry. Young Princess Sophie plans to do just that. And do it well!
Russia’s Empress, Elizabeth, needs to strengthen her throne because her heir and nephew, Peter, is unfit to rule. She invites Sophie and her mother, Joanna, to visit with a view that Sophie might prove to be a suitable bride for Peter and could thus produce a proper heir. But when Sophie’s focus shifts from love to power, each woman must decide what is most important to her and what she is willing to do to achieve it. This is the true backstory of three women, their complicated relationships with power, and the path that led a teenage princess to become Russia’s most powerful female monarch, Catherine the Great.
The Path to Catherine features a cast of three women and a sung-through score with modern musical elements similar to Hamilton and Fun Home, utilizing a combination of percussive grooves and soaring, emotional melodies that take this historic tale into the 21st century.
Why this show? And why now?
The 21st century happily finds us in a renaissance for women. When we track the arc of how we got here, the life of Catherine the Great stands out as a shining example of a woman who broke boundaries and expanded our acceptance as contributors to the world stage.
What was it like to be a woman close to power but without any of your own? What made her so fearless, so determined? What made her the enlightened ruler she was to become? Who was it who influenced her?
With these questions in mind, we decided to write the untold, true story of the young Catherine the Great because where a woman ends up in life is the culmination of not only the path she walked but also who walked with her."

DANIEL DEFOE’S MASTERPIECE BECOMES A STAGE PLAY PRODUCED BY WRITE ACT REPERTORY COMPANY
Willard Manus’ adaptation of A JOURNAL OF THE PLAGUE YEAR, by Daniel (“Robinson Caruso”) Defoe, will be performed by Write Act Rep from Nov. 13th - Dec. 19th, 2021 at the Brickhouse Theatre in North Hollywood. Produced by Write Act’s artistic director John Lant and by Anne Mesa, the play is directed by Daniel E. Keough.
Defoe’s non-fiction book is an account of the pandemic which attacked London in 1664, lasting a year and killing more than half of the city’s population. Although the story took place three hundred years ago, it is amazingly relevant to our present COVID-19 circumstances.
A JOURNAL OF THE PLAGUE year is narrated by H.F., a businessman who has chosen to remain while multiples flee the plague-ridden city. H.F. re-enacts the terror of a helpless people caught in a tragedy they could not comprehend, with the weak preying on the dying, the strong administering to the sick, the wastrels partying in the bars and pavilions, the scientists battling the quacks and doubters.
Manus’ adaptation of Defoe’s masterpiece will be performed as a radio play, but with vivid production values (sound, lighting, and music). Jonathan Harrison is the stage manager/technical director.
The play’s diverse cast includes Charles Anteby, Shelly Desai, Dean Ghaffari, Hettie Lynne Hurtes, Gale Madyun, and Randy Roberts.
Willard Manus is a novelist and journalist as well as a playwright. Among his recent plays are SHOW ME A HERO and FRANK AND AVA (which is now an Amazon Prime movie). His best-known novels are THE PIGSKIN RABBI and MOTT THE HOOPLE, the band from which the British rock group took its name. Manus is a member of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the Actors Studio Playwrights/Directors Unit. He reviews theatre for Total Theatre.com and Lively Arts.com He lived for many years in Greece, serving as the Mediterranean Correspondent for the “Financial Post” (Canada).
Director Daniel E. Keough began studying theatre arts at the Goodman Theatre School of Drama. Trained also in voice and dance, he got his first professional experience performing in musical theatre. Write Act Repertory’s Producing Artistic Director John Lant presents Unforgettable by Rochelle Perry September 15 - October 13, 2019 | Saturdays 7pm & Sundays 2pm Write Act Repertory’s Producing Artistic Director John Lant presents Unforgettable Write Act Repertory's Playwright Spotlight Series, featuring the work of Rochelle Perry, continues our 21st Anniversary Season produced by Tamra Pica and John Lant.
Running Saturdays @ 7:00PM – Running Sundays @ 2:00PM Opening Sunday September 15th – October 13th, 2019
Write Act Repertory's annual playwrights series returns in our NOHO home spotlighting prominent and award-winning Los Angeles playwright Rochelle Perry at the Brickhouse Theater as we continue our 21st season with UNFORGETTABLE.
When unwilling fashion major Rita is forced to spend her last college spring break with her 86-year old Japanese grandmother Keiko, she realizes Keiko suffers from a disease she knows little about - dementia. When she was young her grandmother taught her about the world. Now it's her turn to remind her grandmother of her past. Through Japanese folktales and fantasy-filled stories, Rita discovers her grandparents' unforgettable love for each other, a love she hopes to have for herself in this new American generation.
"We are honored that Ms. Perry chose Write Act Rep to present her newly expanded two-act play. She has been an Artist-in-Residence for 15 years and has been a great ambassador of everything we do at Write Act Rep," states Lant. "I could not be prouder of the work we do here and the environment of safety we provide for brave voices, like Rochelle's, that wish to reach out to the community through their writings. Her positive attitude and forward thinking pushing for more female playwright opportunities is one of the reasons we are here."
Our feature creative artists include Tracy S. Lee (Rita), Randi Tahara (Keiko), George Infantado (Joseph), Ami Shimada (Young Keiko), Godfrey Flax (Marc/Police Officer) and Diane Chernansky (Doctor).
The shows Production Team Members include John Lant (Producing Artistic Director), Tamra Pica (Producer), Rochelle Perry (Playwright), Cassie Soliday (Director), Isabel Gallegos (Costume Designer), Jonathan Harrison (Associate Producer) and Lynn Barzola (Graphic Designer).
“I fell in love instantly with Perry's script,” states Director Cassie Soliday. “The juxtaposition of a young life ready to begin and an old life's memory failing is beautiful and heartbreaking. The characters come alive off the page and I can see my own relationship with my grandmother reflected back at me as well as my complicated feelings of aging! I'm thrilled to get to explore this space with the talented cast and crew at Write Act Rep.”
ROCHELLE PERRY - Playwright Rochelle conceptualized this play after witnessing her maternal grandparents struggling with dementia. She first workshopped its one-act version, Japan 1946 Meets California2010, at the David Henry Huang Writers Institute at East West Players. After her staged reading, people commented about her development as a playwright, saying that it was one of the most mature pieces she’s written. A year later she went on to co-produce it with Write Act Repertory in Hollywood. Since then she has expanded the piece into the full length play it is today. 2019 is an especially important year to mount this title as it represents the decade-long journey of a conceptual homage to a personal denouement, (earlier this year her grandfather passed away, the month of October marks the month of her grandmother's birthday followed by her death in 2013, just months after Perry's wedding. Perry, now 35, also just gave birth to a daughter of her own.) Coming from a diverse background - her Japanese, Chinese, and Filipino heritage mixed with her American upbringing - Perry strives to bring an Asian audience to the theatre. A large number of her one act plays have been produced, but this is her first full length play to make its world premiere. For more information and to follow her endeavors as a playwright, please visit her site: http://rochelleperryplaywright.wordpress.com/
CASSIE SOLIDAY - Director Cassie is a writer, director, and performer. She has studied sketch comedy and improv with Second City Chicago and Hollywood, as well as The Annoyance and Groundlings comedy theatres. Currently, she’s a staff writer on the cutest animated series ever, Disney Jr.’s Puppy Dog Pals, hosts the Ink and Paint Girls podcast, and co-hosts the Jammiest Bits of Jam podcast. Originally from Southern Illinois, Cassie traded her tornado survival kit for a wild fire and earthquake kit, and now lives in Burbank, CA. Her most recent credits are The W*tchy B*tchy Hour at the Hollywood Fringe Festival (writer/dir.), Swing! Write Act Repertory (asst. dir.), Story Collider (co-host/producer), and improvising on many stages, even a few dive bars. She loves collaborating and developing new works, often using improv and finding ways of overlapping stage, screen, and audio arts.
TAMRA PICA - Producer Tamra's theater and television work spans nearly 30 years and over 300 productions as a Producer, casting director, AEA Stage Manager, of plays, musicals, dance and ice shows. Her current Off-Broadway show Frankenstein premiering in 2017 is going into its 3rd year at St. Luke’s Theatre in NYC to be joined later this fall by the NY Off-Broadway premiere of Swing!. REVIEWS FOR THEIR FINEST HOUR: CHURCHILL AND MURROW: "Beautifully written, expertly acted and superbly directed…Bravo!!" "I highly recommend “Their Finest Hour: Churchill and Murrow.”In these times of uncertainty and disrespect in both politics and journalism, spending a little time with two brave and moral souls is much needed and almost medicinal…I certainly felt a lot better for it." - Samantha Simmonds-Ronceros/Noho Arts District
"This thrilling re-enactment of the politician and the broadcaster who joined forces to fight for freedom against fascism are among the finest two hours this reviewer has ever spent in a theater." - Ed Rampell/Hollywood Progressive
"The performances are brilliant with Michael Karm in the starring role, bringing out all the nuances of this bigger than life figure. Tyler Cook, Chantelle Albers, and Beau Hogan round out the cast...a perfect ensemble! Stu Berg did a great job with the challenging staging. "Their Finest Hour" just proves you don't need a major venue to bring a major story to life." -Hettie Lynne Hurtes/KPCC 89.3FM
"Cook takes on a charming, leading man approach to playing Murrow" "Albers is brilliant as the feisty jezebel" "Karm is uncanny as Churchill. Each speech he delivers is laced with the giant’s strength and dignity. He accurately mirrors the man’s famous mood swings and adds emotional depth to his acting, most notably during his candid war room discussions with Murrow to which he reveals personal familial stories." -Stage Raw

Write Act Repertory with Producer Anne Mesa present BONO AND THE EDGE WAITING FOR GODOMINO’S Written and Directed by Richard Lucas The smash hit award-winning comedy comes to Write Act Repertory for a special limited engagement, April 21 - May 26, 2018 - Saturdays at 4pm (Just in time for U2's Los Angeles concert in May!)
"We have asked for the pizza to come, and we have to believe that it will come - because we have asked.” Bono orders pizza delivery to get back in touch with the Common Man… A satire on celebrity culture wrapped in a modern-day parody of ‘Godot’ with questions on art, on being, and on one’s purpose in an absurd, humorous and familiar tune.
BONO AND THE EDGE WAITING FOR GODOMINO'S Written and directed by Richard Lucas Starring Bruno Oliver, Curt Collier, Jeff Blumberg, and Richard Lucas
"Encore Producers Award" Winner, Hollywood Fringe Fest 2017 "Best Comedy" Nominee, Hollywood Fringe Fest 2017 "Best Comedy" Winner, TheTVolution.com "Best of Los Angeles Theatre 2017" List, TheTVolution.com
North Hollywood, CA (April-May 2018): Write Act Repertory’s Producing Artistic Director John Lant and Producer Anne Mesa are proud to present a limited engagement of Bono and The Edge Waiting for Godomino’s, a clever and ingenious new take on Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, written and directed by Richard Lucas, starring Jeff Blumberg, Curt Collier, Richard Lucas, and Bruno Oliver at The Brickhouse Theatre in the heart of the NOHO Theatre Arts District. The 70-min play had its world premiere at the 2017 Hollywood Fringe Festival and was extended with a six-week run at The Whitefire Theatre in Fall 2017. The show garnered several awards and nominations including “Best Comedy,” “Encore Producer’s Award,” and TheTVolution.com’s “2017 Best of Los Angeles Theatre” list.
ABOUT THE SHOW In this parody of Samuel Beckett's "Waiting for Godot," the script is flipped as Bono, wracked with guilt over his own success and fear of having lost touch with his working class and spiritual roots, orders a pizza delivery to his castle in the hopes of conversing with the delivery person about living a real life. But Bono's lifelong U2 bandmate, guitarist The Edge, wants no part of his socio-spiritual experiment and rejects any thought of inviting opinions or judgments on his hard-earned rock star life. Both struggle with the possible hypocrisies in their practices versus their policies in a funny and surprisingly deep comedy that skewers celebrity culture, blind faith, and pretentious theater while searching for the meaning of art in a hyper-capitalist society.
Writer/director Richard Lucas says, “It’s a satire on celebrity culture wrapped in a ridiculous 180-degree parody of ‘Godot.’ The set-up of ‘Waiting for Godot’ is socially pretty well known – the rest of the play, maybe not so much. That said, no one needs to have written a thesis on ‘Godot’ to enjoy our version. As long as one can imagine the off chance that a mega celebrity might feel a moment of self-doubt or a pang of regret at having lost touch with reality, it should be fun.”
"...This is not the first parody of Beckett's "Waiting For Godot" I've ever seen, but it may be the last because I'm not sure it can get any better than this." - FringeReview.co.uk
"An inventive, clever, cool and classy parody of Samuel Beckett's 'Waiting for Godot' featuring an excellent and colorful cast... Has the potential to become a cult favorite." - NoHoArtsDistrict.com
"...Like the legendary shows Beyond the Fringe, The Mighty Boosh, Bing Hitler, Lucas has served up a dish both cerebral and madcap and pulls it off brilliantly..." - TheTVolution.com
"9 out of 10: EXCEPTIONAL SHOW - a great job translating the thoughts and questions from the original into such a modern day scenario..." - LATheatreBites.com
CAST: Jeff Blumberg Curt Collier Richard Lucas Bruno Oliver
Bono and The Edge Waiting for Godomino’s was conceived at the “Serial Killers” show at Sacred Fools, which led to its premiere at the 2017 Hollywood Fringe Festival, where it instantly became an audience favorite and had a highly successful run. Due to its popularity, the show garnered an extension at The Whitefire Theatre in the Fall of the same year and returns now as a special “pop-up” run at Write Act Repertory, just in time for U2’s Los Angeles concert in May!

Producing Artistic Director John Lant Presents Cindy Marinangel as MARLENE World Premiere Of Willard Manus’ New Play About The Legendary Actress, Performer -- And Patriot-- Marlene Dietrich Directed by Judith Rose July 23, 2017 - August 27, 2017
MARLENE will be performed every Sunday night at 7pm through August 27 at the Brickhouse, which is located at 10950 Peach Grove Street, at Camarillo & Vineland, in NoHo.
MARLENE tells a true story. In May, 1960, Dietrich returned to Germany to perform on stage for the first time since fleeing the Hitler regime in 1939. The play is set in Dietrich’s dressing-room at Berlin’s Tatiana Palast Theatre, where she is trying to decide whether she should go through with the recital. Threats have been made on her life by Nazi sympathizers who still resented her for having spent much of WW II entertaining American soldiers on the front lines. In their eyes she is a turncoat, a traitor, and should be killed..
Willard Manus has had numerous plays produced in L.A., most recently “Joe & Marilyn: A Love Story”and “Frank and Ava,”. Among his other plays are “Prez: The Lester Young Story,” “Bird Lives!” and “Berlin Cowboys.”. He is also a journalist and novelist whose best-known work is “Mott the Hoople,” the book from which the 70s British rock band took its name. Manus is a member of the Actors Studio Playwrights/Directors unit and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.
